8th Grade News - 5/11

Math -

This week Math 2 wrap up their unit on Chapter 8, "Analyzing Data".  They will take a test at the end of next week.. Pre-Algebra will continue to study Chapter 11, "Right Triangles in Algebra".  While Algebra will continue with Chapter 12, “Rational Expressions & Functions”.


Science -

There will be one more test for the year on chapter 4. The test will be on Monday, May 21st. Following the test the students will be dissecting a cow eye!


Reading -

Reading 2 will begin their last unit of the school year this week.  It deals with myths, legends, and folktales. Reading 3 will be finishing their WWII Literature Circle this week.  Afterwards, they will be viewing the movie Valkyrie which is about the plot to assassinate Hitler.  They will then compare the two novels with the movie as well as various non-fiction articles.  The culmination will be a 5-paragraph essay discussing the different forms of media and their portrayal of the events.


English -

8th grade  will be writing our Apologetics Essay in the upcoming weeks.  Projected due date: May 24th.


Volunteer Opportunity -

Mrs. Uffenbeck is looking for 4 more 6-8th grade volunteers for Vacation Bible School. It's an excellent way to serve others and share the Gospel message during a fun week over the summer. Please contact Mrs. Uffenbeck with questions or to register as a volunteer.

Memory -

Math -

This week Math 2 began a new unit.  Over the next couple of weeks, they will be studying Chapter 8, "Analyzing Data".  Students will work in groups to collect and analyze data from students who they survey.  On Monday, Pre-Algebra will take a test over Chapter 10, "Area & Volume". Then they will begin to study Chapter 11, "Right Triangles in Algebra".  Algebra will take a test on Tuesday over the material from Chapter 11, “Radical Expressions & Equations”. Then they will begin their final unit - Chapter 12, “Rational Expressions & Functions”.


English -

8th grade will continue demonstration speeches Monday-Wednesday of next week.  


Reading -

Reading 2 has an essay test for The Giver that is due on Monday.  Then they will spend next week working on projects to demonstrate their learning.  Reading 3 has finished reading Boy in the Striped Pajamas.  They have moved on to reading another WWII book in a literature circle.  Ask your student what book they are reading! The goal is to write an essay comparing the two novels, along with a video that we will watch once the literature circle concludes.  


Recognition Dinner -

RSVPs, along with the proper payment, are due to be turned in by Friday, May 11.

Math -

Math 2 will wrap up studying Chapter 7, “Surface Area & Volume”.  There will be a test on Friday, April 28. Pre-Algebra will continue with Chapter 10 “Area & Volume”.  Next week they will switch their focus of surface area to volume. Algebra will continue to study Chapter 11, “Radical Expressions & Equations”.


English -

Because of musical practice, we will actually begin our demonstration speeches the week of 4/29.  Students should be gathering what they need for their demonstration and bringing it to school.


8th Reading -

Reading 2 will continue our novel, The Giver.  Students will continue to take quizzes in the form of comprehension and short answer questions after each reading assignment.  Reading 3 will finish reading The Boy in the Striped Pajamas in the next week.  Afterwards, they will break into literature circles to read another WWII novel--either Anne Frank, Night, or The Thought of High Windows.  They will then compare the novels they read.  


Musical -

On Monday, any families that could help come work on the set for the musical, Mrs. Jurica would really appreciate your help starting at 6:00 pm.  All students should be here on Friday and Saturday night at 6:00 pm to get ready for our 7:00 pm show both nights. Please make sure that costumes come into school on Monday.

Memory -

Math -

This past week Math 2 has been studying Chapter 7, “Surface Area & Volume”.  We have focused on naming 3-D solids and finding surface area. Next week we will continue to work with surface area and look into volume.  Pre-Algebra has begun Chapter 10 “Area & Volume”. Next week Pre-Algebra will focus on surface area. Algebra has just begun to study Chapter 11, “Radical Expressions & Equations”.


Reading -

Reading 2 has begun reading Lois Lowry’s The Giver.  They will look at this “utopian” society, comparing it to the fallen world that we live in.  Students should be doing the assigned readings every night as well as preparing for short answer type quizzes.  Reading 3 has begun reading The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.  We will look at WWII as a whole and talk about the impact literature can have in regards to painting a picture of what life was like.


English -

Students will be performing a demonstration speech next week.  Through expository writing, they will put together an explanation of a complex process and present or demonstrate how this process works.  Presentations will take place at the end of next week.


Holocaust Museum -

On Thursday, 8th grade will be taking a field trip to the Holocaust Museum.  The fee to the museum, as well as their Ventra cards, (We have to use public transportation to get there.) have already been paid for.  I am still working on figuring out the best lunch situation. A permission slip and details about lunch will go home on Monday.

Math -

All math classes need to make sure to have all missing assignments, corrections, and signed tests into Mrs. Runge by Thursday, March 29.   Algebra will wrap up their study Chapter 10, “Quadratic Equations & Functions” and will take a test on Wednesday, March 28.

 

Religion -

Next week will be watching “The Passion of the Christ”.  Please see the permission slip that went home yesterday.

  

Art -

Please send in at least one favorite empty cereal box for an upcoming art project.


End of the Quarter -

All service hours and any missing work is due by Thursday, March 29.


Auction -

The 5th annual PTL auction is quickly approaching.  This year, each classroom is to collect items for a color basket.  Our color is BLUE. Please send your donations into the school office as soon as possible.  Don’t know what items to donate? You are always able to donate cash instead.
