ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN SCHOOL AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS, SPRING 2012

Dear Families:

It’s hard to believe the fall semester is drawing to an end and we will soon celebrate the Christmas season with our families! As we wrap up the semester, we invite you to visit our new After School Program's online registration for the spring semester! We are pleased to offer you the convenience of signing up online and paying by credit card! Not only will this make it a much easier process for our families to register, but it also makes it a much more efficient process administratively…and it cuts our costs by minimizing paper and photocopy usage while respecting the beautiful planet God gave us!

You can find all available classes online here. If you are unable to register online, please contact the office at 773-736-1196. Please register by 1/13/12 to ensure enough time for finalizing the details of the classes.

A FEW NOTES (please keep for future reference):
  • A $5 charge has been added to the original class fee to help supplement the fees incurred for using the site.
  • If your child would like to participate in Tae Kwon Do, please register as soon as possible so that we can assess how many uniforms will need to be ordered for the Spring Semester. Please note that there are two different tickets you can purchase for TKD, depending on whether or not your child will need a uniform ($95 no uniform needed, $125 uniform needed).
  • Please send a small, healthy snack with your child, as each facilitator will give the children approximately 15 minutes to unwind, fuel up, and get ready to go!
  • Should you need to utilize the St. John’s Eagle’s Nest program for your children after they finish their after-school program, please contact the school and make arrangements ahead of time with Denise Zanders.
  • CALLING ALL LEGOs and VOLUNTEERS! Should you have any spare LEGOs lying around that you are tired of stepping on, cry no more! Please consider donating them to our LEGO club! We are also searching for Lego Parent Volunteers – you can receive volunteer credits for helping out! Please contact the office if you are interested in helping! The more volunteers we have, the more children with whom we can share this amazing club! The current max is 30 children, kindergarten - eighth grade.
  • All classes are first come, first served so enroll now to reserve your space! 5 spaces have opened up for Science Club – please register ASAP if your child is interested in joining the club!
  • Please remember to share these programs with your friends and neighbors! All are welcome to participate!
PLEASE NOTE DISMISSAL PROCEDURE FOR ALL CLASSES:

ALL instructors will lead the children to the playground behind the school, where the children will remain in the fenced area. The parents are asked to wait for their children OUTSIDE of the closed gate, until the instructor has given your child permission to exit the playground. If you are unable to pick up your child within 5 minutes of the official end time of the class, your child will be sent to Extended Care and normal fees will incur. Thanks!

CHESS CLUB - CHILDREN NEEDED

Chess Club, which meets on Friday's after school, is in need of ONE more student!

You may think Chess, I don't know.  But, it's one after school program really worth considering.

Studies have proven many benefits for elementary age children who play chess.

Many of the benefits are listed below but above all else Chess is FUN!

Contact the office if interested.  The fee is $80 for the entire Spring session which equals about $10 a session.  Chess Scholars offers many fun incentives too and last class for the last session had a pizza party for the kids!

The Benefits of Chess Include:

Chess has long been regarded as a game that can have beneficial effects on learning on development, especially when it is played from a young age. below are some of the most critical benefits that chess can provide to a child:

Develop analytical, synthetic and decision-making skills, which they can transfer to real life.

Learn to engage in deep and thorough chess research which will help them build their confidence in their ability to do academic research.

Help children gain insights into the nature of competition which will help them in any competitive endeavor.

When youngsters play chess they must call upon higher-order thinking skills, analyze actions and consequences, and visualize future possibilities.

In countries where chess is offered widely in schools, students exhibit excellence in the ability to recognize complex patterns and consequently excel in math and science.
